Getting started with Tangram

Try Tangram at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

A focus for your next round

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Use the example to check your reasoning.

The goal to keep in mind

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Start here and follow along

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Keyboard and screen controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Read a button’s label before selecting it. A new-round button replaces the current round.

See the idea in action

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Verify the rule before continuing.

Where a round can go wrong

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
