An introduction to playing Canfield Solitaire

Read the aim of Canfield Solitaire, then make your first move. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Look at what changes after your first action.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

A small practice goal

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Keep the objective visible.

The purpose of your moves

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

The order of play

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

How to use the controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. Use the control method described here for this activity. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

Learn from a sample situation

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Look for the relevant detail.

Where a round can go wrong

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
