The Peg Solitaire playbook

Peg Solitaire gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

A focus for your next round

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Making your moves

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Choosing and moving on screen

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Use the control method described here for this activity. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Take a moment to compare.

A common point of confusion

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
