Word Deduction: a guide for your next round

Open Word Deduction, check the instructions and begin a round. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Look at what changes after your first action.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

Practice beyond the first move

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your objective

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

The order of play

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Using the playing area

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A closer look at one example

An answer containing one E can award only one positive E mark in a guess containing two. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Take a moment to compare.

An important reminder

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
